• The fervent teacher tried her best to get the sophomores ready for the SAT.
4. Rectify-To correct; make honest
• John tried to rectify his relationship with his friend but things didn’t turn out well.
5. Besiege-to overwhelm; to surround and attack
• Troy was besieged for 10 years by the Greeks.
6. Maelstrom-whirlpool
• On his return voyage home Odysseus had to pass a huge whirling maelstrom in the ocean.
7. Impotent-powerless; lacking strength
• The mouse was very impotent in comparison to the potent cat that had it in its grip.
8. Shard-A fragment
• The shard of shrapnel punctured the cars tire at a high velocity.
9. Impale-to pierce with a sharp stake through the body
• The knife impaled the soldiers arm when he accidentally tripped while brandishing it.
10. Sadistic-deriving pleasure from inflicting pain on others
• The sadist was pleased to see the cat run down the street on fire.
